skin rituals – The Sacred Step You May Be Skipping

An introduction to Laurel Skin’s hydrating elixirs, and why they are the heartbeat of a skin care ritual.

If you are new to the Laurel Skin ritual, start here: the elixir.

Not a toner. Not a mist. Something better. Laurel's hydrating elixirs are a hybrid of artisan-distilled hydrosol and whole-plant extracts, designed to deliver the water-soluble nutrients your skin needs most, including B vitamins, vitamin C, botanical humectants, and more that oil-based products alone are not able to provide.

The ritual is beautifully simple: water first, then oil. Mist the elixir generously onto clean skin, press it in with your palms, and follow with your serum or balm. That two-step pairing is the heartbeat of everything Laurel does.

Laurel makes two elixirs, each addressing a different skin need. Here is how to find yours.

Hydrating Elixir I — Phytonutrient Replenish

For dry, mature, sensitive skin and rosacea.

Elixir I is an act of deep replenishment. If your skin tends toward dryness, feels tight after cleansing, you notice fine lines deepening when you are dehydrated, or redness and sensitivity show up, this formula was made for you.

Rose is the heart of this elixir, chosen for its deeply soothing and supportive qualities. Marshmallow root helps hydrate and soften the skin by drawing in and holding moisture. Astragalus root, long used in herbal traditions, supports the skin’s natural renewal processes over time. Calendula brings a gentle, nourishing quality that helps the skin stay hydrated and comforted.

The result is skin that feels firm, plump, and nourished.

Hydrating Elixir II — Support + Recover

For reactive, inflamed, acne-prone, or hyper-pigmented skin.

Elixir II is the one we reach for when the skin is overwhelmed. Breakouts, redness, inflammation, and hyperpigmentation. This formula was crafted to meet those moments with immediate, cooling relief and the kind of deep, medicinal calm that only whole plants can offer.

Chamomile is the foundation of this elixir, used in several forms from hydrosol to carefully measured essential oils. This helps deliver the full range of the plant’s natural benefits directly to the skin. Lavender, grown biodynamically and distilled on a small California farm, helps support balance in oil production, pH, and the skin’s microbiome, encouraging a calmer, more stable complexion. Turmeric completes the formula with strong anti-inflammatory properties. It helps soothe visible redness and irritation, making it especially supportive for skin that feels reactive or inflamed, or simply needs calming care.

It is also worth saying this: oily skin is often the most dehydrated skin in the room. When the skin is stripped of water, it compensates by producing more oil. Elixir II breaks that cycle by offering genuine water-based hydration that supports the skin’s own intelligence. Over time, the result is real, lasting balance.

Whichever elixir you use, the ritual that follows is the same.

  1. Cleanse.  Begin with a gentle Laurel cleanser to cleanse and prepare the skin.

  2. Mist the elixir, generously.  Shake the bottle well and spray across the face, neck, and chest. Press the mist into the skin with your palms.

  3. Apply your serum or compound.  While the skin is still dewy, press a few drops of a Laurel serum in.

  4. Seal with a balm.  Warm a small amount of Laurel balm between your fingertips and press it into the skin. It protects the barrier and holds everything layered beneath it.

  5. Return to the elixir as needed.  On days when the skin needs more, layer it between steps, or let it be the last thing you offer before you rest.
